So, what part of their mission statement did you find confusing that would lead you to believe that their organization was in any way about straight cis people?

The Lambda Literary Foundation is dedicated to raising the status of openly lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people throughout society by rewarding and promoting excellence among LGBT writers who use their work to explore LGBT lives.

Emphasis mine. By your logic, it's just as unfair to not give an award to an author that's queer but doesn't write queer stories, even though that's plainly not at all what the organization or the award is about.

[personal profile] elf originally left that out of first linkspam post, presumably because it would undermine the points with which she agrees. When she added it, she didn't put in bold the part that you bolded, for the same reason.

There's a serious problem with [community profile] linkspam continuing to call itself an "anti-oppression linkspam community" when the linkspammer is not actually against the system of oppression being discussed.

The whole discussion gets slanted by her pro-oppression bias -- and I'm just talking about her linkspam posts, not even her following up with comments all over the place that make factually untrue statements about when submissions would be accepted and "who determines if someone is LGBT."

People who read the [community profile] linkspam community will see this as an "well, both sides have valid points" type of net.kerfluffle, thanks to [personal profile] elf's spin in that direction and uncritical links to privileged, oppressive bullshit -- and that is not how anti-oppression work is done.

Complaining about "this is setting back LGBT acceptance!" is not how anti-oppression work is done, either.

Now? Nothing. And I don't believe they were ever "about" straight cis people.

Then perhaps the dropping of the "but what about the straight authors?!" is in order.

They used to be about the content; now they're about the people creating it.

I've seen nothing on their site to suggest that it is about the people creating it and nothing to do with the literature, as you imply.

In fact, from the submission guidelines:

In determining whether a book should be submitted for consideration, it should be noted that the Lambda Literary Awards are based principally on the LGBT content, the gender orientation/identity of the author and the literary merit of the work.

Whether a person is queer is one of three criteria for whether it should be submitted, not how it will be judged. This "books are getting judged based on the people that wrote them!" bullshit needs to stop right now.

I didn't say "nothing" to do with the people literature--just that the literature is no longer the mission of the organization.

Hence why I said implied. "They used to be about the content; now they're about the people creating it" heavily implies that the people writing it is more important than the content, which is a blatant lie.

It is still about queer literature; if a queer author submitted literature that didn't have any queer themes in it, it wouldn't be appropriate for the contest. They have eloquently explained why they changed the submission guidelines this year, and I don't know why everyone's eyes seem to be glazing over and all they read is OH MY GOD STRAIGHT CIS PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ENTERING OUR CONTEST IN THE PAST YEARS? GOD I HATE THOSE BREEDERS LET'S MAKE SURE THEY NEVER WIN ANY AWARDS EVER AGAIN!!!!111one and ignoring the actual reasons.

Wishy washy "oh well it would have been okay if it had started that way, but it's meeeeeeen to allow straight people one year and not the next!" is ally fail. Situations change, and to stick your head in the sand and ignore the circumstances they outlined is ridiculous.
