It's fun collecting them. In a "watch the trainwreck" sort of way.

It looked like there were getting to be enough of them that it'd be really useful to have them all in one spot. This looks like it could get big, especially if the surveyors continue to discuss things with people who comment at them.

I'm kinda watching it with a trainwrecky feeling, myself.

The 'research' is... well, my putting it with quote marks expresses my feelings--which are probably the same every time I encounter evo-psychologist doing their thing. I don't really look forward to reading more of their bullshit.

On the other hand, I can't wait for serious fandom discussion to come out of it, like it's already happening. A lot of their heteronormative and ridiculous notions about human sexuality exist in fandom, and I rather like the idea of that getting meta air. Not that it doesn't, usually, but metafandom had been rather dry lately.

(I'm also rolling my eyes at the fact that despite all the hate on their being exclusionary, there's practically nary a word about how 'slash'=/='fanfic', and 'lj fandom'=/='all fandom'. But hey, it is a minor matter*, and I'm used to it.

*In terms of offence, I mean. In terms of doing a complete survey of fandom, a rather large one.)

I'm fascinated by the assumptions buried in the quiz. I'm tempted to post it myself as a DW quiz, with every question allowing an "other--explain in comments" option.

There's been some discussion about slash=/=fanfic, but it's been rather buried; there's been a bit more about slash=/=straight-men-having-sex, because that inspired some serious headdeskery. There's also been some discussion that fanfic=/=fandom, which got brushed aside.

I don't read m/m slash.
There was always something special about the idea, even before I heard of slash.
I never even thought about the idea until I encountered slash, but I immediately knew I liked it.
It took some time for me to warm up to the idea of m/m slash.

It's not that I'm not familiar with that genre of slash. I just always thought it was in the minority. At the very least, it's certainly not inherent to the definition of slash. Also, femmeslash invisibility FTW.

They were pointed out, in a couple of places, that the question, as written is unanswerable by many slash fans. Their responses were always the same... "what? But we talked to slash fans before we wrote this, and they said the forbidden, society-doesn't-approve aspects were essential to the appeal of slash fic."

And yeah, they were additionally told that
1) Whoever you talked to, they don't represent All Of Slash Fandom, and
2) Forbidden-love appeal doesn't mean we thought they were straight, or they seemed straight.

They're also surprised at the speed and number of responses. Which means, LOL, they didn't research their target audience. Oh, I'm so shocked!
