Christian A Young @ Dimlight Archive: Adventures in e-Publishing, Cat Valente is right about everything ever, and night of the (not-gay!) living dead
In less cheerful news, an upcoming anthology I'd planned to submit to has recently been withdrawn by the publisher because of anti-gay sentiment expressed not by possible readers, but by other authors who’ve submitted work the publisher.

So last month, Library of the Living Dead Press put out a call for an LGBT zombie anthology (which sounds like a very cool project, actually). Yesterday, the publisher pulled the plug on the anthology. From the editor:

"It is with deep regret that I must inform you that the publisher has pulled the plug on this anthology. It seems that homophobia had reared its ugly head..NOT from the publisher, but with some authors that are contributers to the publisher."

In other words, it sounds like some of the authors who publish with LLD found out that their publisher was doing an anthology that had teh gay in it, and complained.

Doctor Pus at Library of the Living Dead Press put out a statement regarding the cancellation of their LGBT-themed zombie anthology. I appreciate that he takes responsibility for the decision, and that he offers a kill fee to the authors, but nothing in his statement changes my initial anger and disappointment.

So if the guy had really gotten complaints from homophobes and pulled the book, I would have been disappointed and cranky, but moderately understanding. Pulling the book because he's stressed and has too much on his plate? disappointed, but understanding. Pulling the book because of either the potential for homophobes that have not actually appeared and/or because he was afraid it would be seen as gimmicky and not generate appropriate stories are action/reason scenarios that are homophobic - the first an indirect and convoluted version of "gays will make trouble," while the second sounds suspiciously like equating LGBTQ content with inappropriately sexualized content and/or LGBTQ authors with a sub-group of authors not producing appropriate quality.

The EiC of a horror micropress caved to imaginary bigots over hypothetical outrage.

Unfortunately he's an awesome guy in a position to learn some uncomfortable lessons. As the whole matter of the queer zombie antho's demise develops in public, the more troublesome it is for those of us who aren't in the LLD inner circle.

[livejournal.com profile] jimhines: My Final Word on LLD Press
When I stir something up online, I feel obligated to follow up. I raked Library of the Living Dead over the coals at the start of the week based on their editor's announcement. When their story changed, I felt like I should share that new information with the same people who saw the initial post.

It just seems like the right thing to do. It's only fair to get the corrected info out there, and this blog reaches a lot more people than the LLD forums. Except that things kept changing...
