By John Rico:
It's a rumor that's been circulating within the back channels and undertows of the internet for a couple of years now. Discussed and endlessly debated on message boards, argued back and forth by comic book fans, it's caused so much distress and excitement within fan circles that you’d think they were arguing about a film that had already been shot and released into theaters. And the rumor is this: That Captain America, Marvel's iconoclastic leader of the Avengers whose due for his own film in 2011 by director Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park 3, The Rocketeer) is going to be played by none other than Will Smith. [Same article as deadbrowalking; different comments]

There are discussions on deadbrowalking and debunking white about an article: "Should Will Smith Play Captain America?" (ie, "what if Captain America were black?") and how the story might be affected. The author of the article is not a Captain America fan -- but I think in this discussion, that's almost besides the point because it's not so much about Captain America the character as it is what he represents -- if he's the American ideal...well, first of all, does there have to be just one representation of it and secondly, does it have to be (only) of a white man? Although, granted, it's easier for me to think of this in abstract terms because I have no particular interest in Steve Rogers.
[Post is images: casting Marvel characters with people of color; references earlier post on Captain America]
So [info]handyhunter had a post about the Will Smith as Captain America rumors (don't get excited, they're just rumors) which led into a post where she recast different Marvel characters with actors who are PoC, and then bossymarmalade followed up here with more picspam, mostly X-Men. And I commented to bossymarmalade suggesting Jon Huertas as Wolverine, and then was going to make more suggestions, but after a certain point it was just like omg, make your own post already. With pictures.
So, crossedwires posted this, which made me crank up the photoshop and make a Danny Pudi!Spider-Man:
So st_aurafina made a post which linked to some other posts in which folks re-cast Marvel characters as characters of color, as well as including her own ideas. Which is awesome and I totally wanted to do it, except Marvel isn't my fandom.
Marvel Chromatic Casting Meme
I got sort of inspired to play off this and re-imagined the cast of Star Trek XI as women.
